Three Ways To Nurture Your Catholic Faith in Your Children

In this day and age of technology and instant access, there is much to compete with in our children's lives. It can be more than difficult to connect and create strong enough bonds to our faith and family without added distractions. I truly believe that knowledge is power and understanding your obstacles is the best way to create a plan to succeed in any endeavor.

The endeavor that is most important to me right now is helping to cultivate a love for God, family and the Catholic Church in my children. This has been a topic of interest for me for quite awhile actually. I am a cradle Catholic. Born and raised to go to Confession on Saturday afternoon, attend Mass on Sunday mornings and participate in Catechism classes and Youth groups as needed. That was the recipe to create a love for my Catholic faith. I am not knocking this recipe because obviously something went right. I am now thirty years old, still Catholic and attempting to nourish a faith in my own children and family. I am here to share what I have learned through many trials, more errors and things that I still do today.

Find a Parish to call Home

This is probably one of the most important things you can do to establish a real relationship with your children and their faith. A Parish is not just the church you attend on Sundays or other Holy days of Obligation. A Parish is a second family. They will be present for some of the biggest milestones and memories of your family! Baptisms, First Communion, First Reconciliation, Confirmation, Marriage and even funerals. They will be there when you need help, whether prayers or other types of assistance.

Create relationships with the people sitting with you in the pews and go say hello to your priest. My children have always been enamored by the priests of our parish. They love to give hugs, high-fives and always smile when they see people from our parish around town. My oldest son's teacher is even in attendance at our parish!

Another important aspect of being in a Parish is participation. Sign up to attend bible studies and other Parish hosted events as a family. Allow your children to make friends with kids at Religious Education and youth groups. Embrace what your Parish can offer your family but remember that it is also important to volunteer and give back as well.

Decorate Your Catholic Home

As a child, I remember the beautiful gold display that had the Ten Commandments engraved above my dining room table. The nostalgia of childhood rings so strong when you become an adult. Bring your faith into your home and allow it to have a place in your everyday life, not just Sunday worship.

The Liturgical season is full of distinct colors, sounds and beautiful scenes that can be displayed in your home. Add Holy Water Fonts, Crucifixes and display portraits of Our Lady and the Holy Family. I have incorporated a Home Altar that we update with the Liturgical colors, special Saints of the season, candles and rosaries.

The more these special reminders of our Catholic faith become apart of your families everyday life, the harder it will be for your children to go out into the world without them. These additions to your home can also be passed along to your family as they grow. There was a gorgeous statue of Mother Mary that was my Grandmother Mary's that my dad gave to me when I had children. It was something that I was able to bring with me from my childhood and I hope to pass along to my children one day as well.

Create Happy Memories and Traditions

This suggestion is probably the most important. Creating memories that are warm, happy and include our faith will be what our children think about in times of turmoil. The Liturgical year makes this super easy! Celebrate anniversaries of your children's Sacraments and Saint's feast days. Make new traditions with baking special dinners or desserts on certain days. There are several Liturgical seasons to embrace and each month is dedicated to a special devotion too. I include those days on our family calendar so everyone can see it. My children have started to remind me about certain activities or movies we are suppose to watch on certain feast days now! We incorporate special blessings and prayers. Create candles, crafts and so much more. Make the Catholic faith come to life.

If you need some ideas for ways to incorporate faith into your everyday activities, check out some of my ideas under the Liturgical Celebrations tab. Let your creativity free! You will be creating memories for yourself and your children! The positive association between happiness, love and faith will be something that your family can tangibly look back on as they grow older and venture into the world. My favorite thing about my faith is that we Catholics know how to celebrate! We do have many traditional ways you can incorporate but do not let that interfere with trying out some new family traditions that will be passed on to your children's children.

Rocking Motherhood Challenge

Motherhood is crazy roller-coaster that is unique and amazing everyday, even with its moments of anxiety from the crazy momentum and scary turns that you never saw coming. I consider motherhood the biggest blessing to ever been given to me. I look back at my life and cringe with some of the crazy and nonsensical things I have done. Becoming a mom was the the absolute best thing that has ever happened to me. I have two beautiful little boys that know how to make the me the happiest woman on Earth but can also push me to the edge of insanity with a moments notice. Although there are times when I honestly have no clue what I am doing, I know that I am rocking motherhood in my own special little way. I have embraced the roller coaster ride and am excited to see what lies around the bend.

I was tagged by Hannah over at Lovely Little Lives to participate in the 10 Ways I'm Rocking Motherhood Challenge. Thank you Hannah for giving me the opportunity to look at motherhood through a positive perspective. You can check out her post in the link above and you can continue reading to see how I am rocking motherhood below:

I am a fighter.

Through my past ten years as a mommy I have had to battle many demons that I never imagined. I fought my way out of an abusive marriage. It took four long years but we all survived. I have fought with back pain for longer than I can remember. I fight depression and anxiety everyday. No matter what happens, I will continue to fight. My God is larger than anything that can come against me and my family and I want my children to know this from my example. I also want them to know that I am always in their corner just waiting for when they need me.

I am Patient.

Little man is almost ten years old now, extremely intelligent and likes to act older than his age. Goalie is developmentally delayed and struggles with emotions, socializing and education. They are opposites in so many ways and sometimes it is hard to parent children that are so different. God has blessed me with a great deal of patience (most days) and I think that it helps me to be a better mom and wife.

I cook home-made dinners almost every night.

I really enjoy having a hot dinner ready for my family because it is one way that I like to show I care. It is also fun to make new recipes and have my boys help me cook. Creating healthy habits is important and the family time that comes with a hot dinner together doesn't get much better. There are some nights that I would rather pick up some takeout but it would create a completely different atmosphere in my home. These dinners are anticipated and loved by the entire family.

I will NEVER allow my boys to quit.

Dedication is an important character trait that I hope my children grasp with both hands. We discuss every extracurricular activity and sport prior to us registering or joining because there is always the understanding that we will be making a commitment that will not be broken. Cub Scouts, Soccer, Football, Boys on the Run and 100 Mile Club. These are all activities that my kids participate and they know they are expected to be a reliable team player. They will show up to practices and games and they will always be good sports, whether they win or lose. I am proud to say that they both have received awards for being a "Christ-like" player.

I am crafty.

I have thrown together turkey shifts and ugly sweaters. I have crafted saint costumes from curtains, pillow cases and eyeliner. I am proud to say that last minute projects are one of those things I happen to excel.Taking the time and effort to make crafts and personalized items makes my boys feel special and I love to do it. I enjoy doing arts and crafts with the boys, in fact, we have coloring nights all the time! We pick out a movie, make some snacks and pull out all the crayons, colored pencils, markers and paper. We push play and it's a coloring-fest for the next few hours.

I am organized, at least I try to be organized.

I utilize a planner, Cozi and bullet journal. With all the craziness that life throws at us schedule wise, I make it happen. Everyone knows the plan for the day each day and upcoming plans for the week.

I am teaching them to be good Catholics.

This is the most important thing that I can do for my children. Dressing them in their Sunday Best every Sunday for Mass, teaching them the Commandments, Beatitudes, Acts of Mercy and following the Golden Rule. These are things that I am teaching them in their everyday life through examples and correcting them when they stray off the path of righteousness.

I am a volunteer.

I volunteer to help at school functions, at our church, Cub Scouts and the kids' extracurricular activities. I want my children to have me by their sides and able to be a full participant in their achievements. This can sometimes be difficult since I work but I try my best and offer up the difficult times up to God.

10 Quotes to Motivate and Inspire Everyday {Plus Free Printable}

Whether you are a stay at home or working husband/wife, house work is never really fun. It can often times be a thankless job that can feel redundant and pointless. I will wash the clothes or dishes today to only have double the amount to wash the next day. The boys bathroom is forever covered in toothpaste, toilet paper and other questionable things. My husband will leave his gym bag and work papers scattered across his trail from the doorway to the bedroom. Don't think that I don't contribute to the mess as well. I am also guilty of leaving my gym clothes, books and shoes scattered as well. I also am guilty of throwing clean clothes in a pile on a chair and leaving them for a day...or two or folding clothes and leaving them stacked sky high because I can't bring myself to put them away.

I also am the only one who cooks. My husband puts in many hours at work and I am home more so it is one of my daily chores. Sometimes I really don't feel like cooking but we don't have the option of ordering out (too much money for this frugal family and my boys would burn the house down) Over the past few months I have been trying to reevaluate the negative attitude I have towards these everyday activities. God made us all special and he wants us to be happy and feel accomplished in our lives. I have found that my negativity is dragging me down. It makes my life seem so much more difficult than it truly is and it keeps me blind to seeing the many blessings I have been given. During my soul searching, I came across these quotes that really stirred my desire to be the best homemaker I can be.

"Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love."
--Mother Teresa

When I hear this I think about all the chores I do throughout my day. I may not be doing something that will change the world but completing those duties does matter to my family. I can prepare my family a dinner and do it with a joyful heart because that is what God wants of me. It is the job he has blessed me to do; to provide for my family and I want my family to feel my love through my actions as well as my words.

"Jesus, help me to simplify my life by learning what You want me to be - and becoming that person."
--Saint Thérese of Lisieux

"Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire!"
--Saint Catherine of Siena

Both of these quotes ask the question: Who were you meant to be? I think I am still answering that question but I do know that I am a mother and a wife. If I am being the best mother and wife I can be, I will set the world on fire. The important thing is learning how to be what I was meant to be and accept it wholeheartedly. When you fight against who you are, you are fighting against God and his great plans for you.

"I am not capable of doing big things, but I want to do everything, even the smallest things, for the greater glory of God."
--Saint Dominic Savio

Washing dishes and folding laundry sometimes seem like big things but in this context if I am doing the dishes and laundry for God, it makes the task seem not big enough. If you were asked to do something for God, you would do it to the very best of your ability. This is how I want to tackle all my chores for the greater glory of God.

"Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies."
--Mother Teresa

Progress is made with baby steps but as long as you are moving forward you have progress. Faith is a constant stream that flows through all aspects of your life, including the tedious tasks of housework, grocery shopping and other activities that fill our everyday lives. We should allow our faith to grow with us in our everyday lives.

"The secret of happiness is to live moment by moment and to thank God for all that He, in his goodness, send to us day after day."
--Saint Gianna Molla

I think this is my favorite quote. It is simple in it's message but reminds us that God knows what we will come against everyday. He loves us and blesses us everyday. Sometimes those blessing are noticeable, others have to be recognized by faith.

"I know well that the greater and more beautiful the work is, the more terrible will be the storms that rage against it."
--Saint Faustina

"The world offers you comfort, but you were not made for comfort. You were made for greatness."
--Pope Benedict XVI

We are warriors of Christ. In our daily lives we are called to be faithful servants and followers. He never said it would be easy, but it will be worth it. We should not live our lives in search of comforts but how we can be useful in God's plan. Both of these quotes remind us that our lives are special gifts and we will have to fight for them along the way.

"The future starts today, not tomorrow."
--Saint Pope John Paul the Great

Don't put off your responsibilities until tomorrow, complete them today. You never know what God has planned for your life but he wants you to be successful and happy. Roll with the punches and trust that you are where you are suppose to be in life, in your family and accomplishments.

"Pray as though everything depended on God. Work as though everything depended on you."
--Saint Augustine

Prayer is our connection to God and being prayerful during our entire day is important and powerful. The comparison of prayer to our work is a strong statement. Imagine how important your work really is, if it is being compared to the importance of prayer and that should motivate you to work hard consistently.

{JEI}: Mommy Self-Care

Welcome to another week of Just Enough Info with The Zelie Group. This week we are discussing Mom Self-Care.

I'd love to introduce you to the other hosts of the JEI: Just Enough Info Linkup:

1. What is your mom beverage of choice?

I am an avid coffee drinker in the mornings. I am also that person that goes crazy for pumpkin spice! So as you can imagine I am so excited today is the official first day of fall and I am celebrating with a cup of Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Cafe Latte and it is so good! I have a Keurig coffee maker and I honestly don't buy the k-cups too often because they are expensive but I do like to treat myself every once in awhile. What I normally do is purchase whole coffee beans and grind them fresh to put in a re-useable k-cup and serve it with a flavored creamer. It's one of the few ways I keep from splurging on a $6-$7 cup of coffee from a coffee place but still get a tasty warm beverage full of that amazing caffeine. I can't think straight until that first dose of caffeine gets into my blood stream. What is funny is that I have pulled my husband into loving coffee too but he drinks his cold and black!! I know he's crazy!!

Although I am a lover of coffee, Wine is my true best friend. Wine helps me celebrate the liturgical year, the end of a long day or special time with my family and friends. It's always there in the good times and bad and that's why wine is one of my favorite beverages of choice.

Coffee keeps me going until it’s time for wine. – Unknown

2. What do you do to relax?

Running, writing, reading, crafting, loving of my cats and drinking coffee and wine! I'll be honest we are an "ON THE GO" kinda family. We decided to live in a small apartment to save money for a house and to be able to afford family trips and activities that give our children everlasting memories. We love being busy and having things to do. I do miss having more free time like I did over the summer so i could read more and other activities of my choosing but this is my life and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Speaking of relaxing... I decided to take the morning off to have a day to get my house back in order from our trip to see my family last weekend and to prepare for the big football game tonight! It's a big one because Little Man plays on the Steelers this season but he played with the Bulldogs last season and today we are up against the Bulldogs! He is nervous and excited and we are also responsible for halftime snack! If my little tangent here didn't show you I have no clue how to "take a day off" and "relax," I don't know what will!

3. When was the last time you got away with girlfriends or alone (and the grocery store does NOT count)?

This question made me a little sad. We haven't been in Colorado for a full year yet so I don't really have an friends yet. I have TONS of acquaintances but I just have not had the pleasure of connecting one-on-one with anyone. However, I did meet a fellow mommy that lives in the same complex during a run several weeks ago and we have been talking and she has even helped with babysitting. I am hoping that we can grow into really good friends and have some alone mommy time soon!

So as of right now, the only "girl" time I get is with my cats Lemon, Shadow and Cloudy. Yep... I am the Cat Lady!!

Well that is my take on Just Enough Info this week. I would love to hear your thoughts! Feel free to use the beautiful picture below in your linkup post if you so desire!

Please Join us and Link Up with your answers to this week's questions about Mom Self-Care:

1. What is your mom beverage of choice?
2. What do you do to relax?
3. When was the last time you got away with girlfriends or alone (and the grocery store does NOT count)?

Next week we will be discussing The Angel Feasts that are celebrated on September 29th and October 2nd. Here are the questions:

1. Naming your Guardian Angel: yea or nay?
2. Have you had any angel experiences?
3. How have you shared about angels with your kids?

I can't wait to see how everyone answers this week because it is all about mommies and let's be honest: we are amazing! We take care of our families and don't always take care of ourselves. Use this week to take a good hard look at some of your mommy self-care needs.

Feel free to check out the last few weeks of JEI to learn about the link up rules and other fun topics we have already discussed:

Mother's Day Living Room Camp Out

I know this post is a week late but I am trying to get caught up after a long work week.
I am trying to get creative with my pictures :o) How do you like the collage of our Mother's Day Living Room Camp Out?  We had the camp out Saturday night into Mother's Day. We all had such a great time with mini strawberry shortcakes and s'mores!
Mother's Day this year actually fell on the Feast Day of Our Lady of Fatima as well. We were planning a nice May Crowning Luncheon but Squishy had an asthma attack that night so our plans were put on hold. I hope to do something special for Mary before the end of the month.
In honor of of Lady of the Rosary we watched The Day the Sun Danced: The True Story of Fatima. The boys really liked the movie and so did I. I am working on building up our movie gallery with more movies like this from CCC of America
It is a great Feast Day to start a daily Rosary.
I hope everyone had an amazing Mother's Day and Feast of Our Lady of Fatima!

Prayer to Our Lady of Fatima

Dearest Mother, Queen of the Holy Rosary, who came to Fatima to reveal to all mankind the Divine plan for true Christian peace, of prayer, penance, and consecration, grant an abundance of grace, strength, and guidance to the members of Thy Fatima Crusade, here present and throughout the world. Inspire us to great zeal, oh great Mediatrix of All Graces, that we may be effective instruments in spreading devotion to Thy Rosary; that we may be faithful in wearing Thy scapular; that we may inspire our brothers in Christ to a life of sacrifice, penance, and modesty, and finally, that we may help to bring about that wonderful day when all men, through consecration to Thy Immaculate Heart, shall be one in Christ. Amen.

Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for us!

A Mother's Love and Tradition

I began this blog to help me find unique ways to incorporate my Catholic faith in my children's lives. I was inspired by several other blogs that I was reading even before I had my own blog. Lately I have been thinking about what it means to be a good mother, which I guess is appropriate for the upcoming month of May. Mother's Day and Mary are honored during this month. I want to have my children know that I love them with every ounce of life God has given me. I want them to grow into the young gentlemen I see in my dreams. I know God has amazing plans for them to touch people's lives, they have already changed mine. My Baptismal Saint is Saint Anne, the mother of Mary. Recently I have found myself thinking about her and how she must have been such an amazing mother to be able to raise such a wonderful daughter like Mary to become the mother of Jesus. I feel so blessed to have children that are sweet and thoughtful. I can feel God's love when I watch them sleep or when they are playing together. Having children has taught me that I was a very selfish person as a young adult. I always felt that my "stresses" in life were so much larger than they actually were. Having my boys opened my eyes to the real world and popped the bubble I was living inside. When I experienced the unconditional love that comes with having a child I knew I was on the path to become the person I was meant to be.

Little Man has two Baptismal Saints that we gave him when he was born, Saint Michael and Saint Dominic. Saint Michael the Archangel was always special to me because he is my brother's Baptismal Saint as well and the church I spent my young adult years had a special devotion to him. Saint Dominic's mother had a dream about him before he was born and he grew to have a close relationship to Our Lady of the Rosary. I also had dreams about my Little Man before he was born and I knew he was going to be a very special child. Little Man loves when we say our rosaries together and talks about Mary and Jesus all the time. I know he has big things destined in his life.

Squishy's Baptismal Saint is Saint Joseph, the husband of Mary. We chose Saint Joseph because he is the Patron Saint of families. We had a miscarriage just before we found out we were pregnant with Squishy. It was a very difficult time and I was very nervous during my pregnancy with him. We knew he was such a special addition to the family and we have asked Saint Joseph to pray for him as he grows. We prayed for this little boy so hard and we knew he would teach us to embrace all the crosses we have been asked to carry in our lives. Losing our precious baby before him was hard and I will always remember the day we said goodbye but I know we will meet again.

Lately I have been trying to think of some ways to make a special gift for my children that I can give them when they reach special milestones in their life. I think I would like to make them a journal/ scrapbook. On special days like birthdays, anniversaries of their sacraments to document milestones in their lives. I would like to write them letters and place them within the journal with pictures and cards from other family members. I think it could be a humbling gift for them when they reach their adult years. I am learning to find the small pleasures in life and I hope this little gift will illustrate my personal growth as a mother and the special place each of my kids has in my heart.

Until then, I will strive to be the kind of mother God has called me to be and raise my children the best way I can, with God as our center. I hope that the month of May is a time for great spiritual growth. I hope this little journal can become a tradition for my family.

Prayer to St. Anne
With my heart full of the most sincere venerations, I prostrate myself before thee, O glorious Saint Anne. Thou art that creature of privilege and predilection, who by thy extraordinary virtues and holiness didst merit from God the high favor of giving life to her who is the Treasury of all graces, blessed among women, the Mother of the Word Incarnate, the most holy Virgin Mary. By virtue of so lofty a privilege, do thou deign, O most compassionate saint, to receive me into the number of thy true clients, for so I profess myself and so I desire to remain throughout my entire life.

Shield me with thine effectual patronage and obtain for me from God the power to imitate those virtues where with thou wast so plentifully adorned. Grant that I may know and weep over my sins in bitterness of heart. Obtain for me the grace of most active love for Jesus and Mary, and resolution to fulfill the duties of my state of life with faithfulness and constancy. Save me from every danger that confronts me in life, and help me at the hour of death, that so I may come in safety to paradise, there to sing with thee, O most happy mother, the praises of the Word of God made Man in the womb of thy most pure daughter, the Virgin Mary. Amen.
Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory be, (three times).
