Quiet Faith: Reconciliation

It's the start of a new year. A new year means all things are new, bright and clean. Reconciliation is like the start of a new year and is an act of quiet faith. To be completely honest, the quiet faith required for Reconciliation is terrifying to me. I am so grateful for this wonderful Sacrament but I am overwhelmed with the immensity of the act of complete forgiveness that leaves your hear and soul quiet so that it is prepared to hear God speak.

I am a cradle Catholic and when I was growing up we went to Reconciliation very consistently. My father would bring my entire family to our local parish every first Saturday of the month. We would wait in the line outside the confessional and just wait. There was no talking. There was only silence. I remember realizing this quietness at a young age, before I was old enough to participate in the Sacrament, and thinking it was odd. Church was a quiet and reverent place but this silence was different than anything I have ever experienced.

I would watch people come and go from the Confessional. Some were quick, others took a very long time; Some parishioners left smiling and others left in tears. My mother was one of those who often left in tears. Seeing all these grown people that I admired, loved and looked up to in such an emotional state after leaving the confessional had a huge impact on me. Those were my first memories of Reconciliation. After that, I remember attending my Catechism classes to receive my first Reconciliation and being so terrified of the confessional. I was petrified of admitting all the not so nice things I had done, said and thought throughout my short 7 years of life. I had convinced myself that I must be the most horrible person in the world.

The day that I received my First Reconciliation was a life changing experience for me. I actually cried while I waited to go into the confessional and when it was my turn all I remember is opening the door and hearing silence. As I entered the confessional, I completed my blessing and even (with a huge burst of courage) decided to sit in front of the priest versus behind the screen. As I began speaking to start my confession, I again started crying. I apologized to the priest expressing that I was so scared that God would hate me for admitting all the sins I had committed, especially the ones I committed on purpose.

I will never forget the priest, Fr. Grotchen, who took my hand and smiled at me. He explained that the entire purpose of Confession was to reconnect with God. He listened to me pour my little heart out and many many tears. He told me that I should never be afraid to speak to God because God is always longing for me to return to him just like the story of the Prodigal son. He told me that when I did my penance to be calm and quiet and God would wash away all my sadness and restore me to grace. I was shocked when he told em to be "calm and quiet". It has always stuck with me.

Since my First Reconciliation I have been to MANY confessionals and I have had an abundance of sins to confess but I will always remember that the quiet that I was once so afraid of, is nothing but God's way of connecting to me in my heart and cleansing my soul. You have to embrace the Quiet to feel God speak to you.

Truth be told, I am still scared of Reconciliation and I have made it one of my resolutions to embrace this Quiet Faith and attend it more often. It is even more important now because my oldest son has received his First Reconciliation and loves it. I don't want him to lose that love for the Sacrament that makes us new again. I am so proud of the gentleman he is growing into and the love he has for his faith.

Oddly enough, I decided to pick a saint at random to learn about and pray for spiritual guidance throughout this year. I drew the name Saint Jan Sarkander, the martyr of the confessional. I'll share more on this amazing saint later. I know God is asking me to come to him in the Sacrament of Reconciliation and I know that he gave me this saint to help me find him where I am most fearful to go.... into the Quiet, because I feel unworthy. Where do you find the quiet in your faith? Is it a struggle like it is for me?

This is my post for The Zelie Group’s new link-up, “Getting To Know Us”. We invite you to write a blog post (or two!) or post on social media about what “Quiet” means to you during the month of January. I decided to share Starlight Cookies with both Cookie Exchanges I am participating in this year. The Starlight Cookie tells the story of the Nativity and is a beautiful and yummy reminder of the reason for the season. This is the Recipe that was sent to me by a friend. It was originally found at the blog Shower of Roses. They offer a printable and a great way to gift these cookies in a mason jar so make sure to check them out and thank her for such an amazing recipe idea! I will be baking mine this Saturday for our Christmas Parties!

1/2 Cup Chopped Walnuts
1/2 Cup White Chocolate Chips
1/2 Cup Dried Cranberries
1/3 Cup Brown Sugar
1/3 Cup Sugar
1/2 Cup Rolled Oats
1 1/4 C All-Purpose Flour
1/2 Tsp Baking Soda
1/2 Tsp Sea Salt
1/2 Cup Softened Butter
1 Egg
1 Tsp Vanilla Extract

Chopped Walnuts: Represents the rocky road the holy family traveled to Bethlehem
White Chocolate Chips: Represents the stars, especially the one that led the Wise Men to Jesus
Dried Cranberries: Represents the tartness of the doors that were closed because they refused to host the holy family that cold night
Brown Sugar: Represents the brown hills of Bethlehem
Sugar: Represents snow
Rolled Oats: Represents the animals that were present in the stable where Jesus was born
Flour: Represent the wholesome goodness of the shepherds in the fields
Baking Soda and Sea Salt: Represents the Joyful tears that were shared on the holy night Jesus was born of the Most Pure Virgin Mary.
Vanilla Extract: Represents the sweet happiness that the Savior was born
One Egg: Represents the baby Jesus

To make the cookies:

Think of the preparation St. Joseph and Our Blessed Mother must have made for this journey to Bethlehem:
Heat the oven to 350 degrees and grease a cookie sheet or line it with parchment paper.

For the light of Heaven:
In a medium bowl, beat together 1/2 cup softened butter, 1 egg, and 1 tsp of vanilla until fluffy.

Add the hardships of the journey to the light of Heaven:
Add all the other ingredients and mix together until well blended. Drop by heaping spoonfuls onto the prepared baking sheets

Remember the hardships of Jesus' life on earth and His Passion:
Bake for 8 - 10 minutes, or until edges brown.

Anticipate His coming:
Cool on baking sheets or remove to cool on wire racks.

Appreciate the joy and promise of His birth:
Enjoy eating them!

Catholic Faith Formation

Welcome to the weekly link-up recently turned Blog-Hop Just Enough Info or just, JEI for short. This lovely Blog-Hop is hosted by The Zelie Group and we would love for you to join us! This week we are discussing Religious Education! Let's get started with this week's questions:

Do your children attend your parish’s religious education program?

Yes! My children do attend our Parish Religious Education Program. They have been in attendance since they were in Kindergarten. My oldest is now an Altar Sever and both of my boys are participating in the Children's Christmas Choir this year. We are blessed with an active parish and they are hosting Parish Faith Nights ever couple of months to increase family participation in the Religious Education Program.

I do believe that Faith Formation has to be part of the home atmosphere as well. My boys seem to grasp more faith concepts that we have incorporated into our family time and traditions than the concepts that they learn about without being able to put their faith into action.

Do you or have you ever taught religious education?

Yes I have! And I am currently teaching my 4th graders Religious Education Class. I have taught for several years and have always enjoyed it. When I was in high school, my best friend even taught a preschool class with me! I really enjoy being a Catechist and hope that I am able to continue to volunteer and help in my parish. I also love when I see my students outside of class and they are excited to see me!

What is your favorite religious education resource for kids?

For the classroom, I would have to say that I rely on my Catechist book a lot but I take a look at Pinterest and Holy Heroes too! I am always looking for great resources so I can't wait to hear about everyone else's ideas on this subject!

At home, I am utilizing the Holy Heroes Advent Adventure for the children while we celebrate the Advent season. In addition to that we are creating a Jesse Tree Garland and much more... If you are still in need of ways to get your Advent on track check out my Advent Series. It contains links to many resources, crafts, books and movies!

I have also been blessed with a gift of the Little Catholic Box and I just won a FREE box from the Mass Box! I'll share more on these lovely gifts later!

You have all week to answer this week's questions that are all about Religious Education:

1. Do your children attend your parish’s religious education program?
2. Do you or have you ever taught religious education?
3. What is your favorite religious education resource for kids?

The Zelie Group has some fun questions coming up in the next few weeks so make sure to follow us on Facebook and we would love to hear what you are interested in! What are you looking to learn about? Do you have questions about the Faith? Questions about the Liturgical Year? We want to help and learn and grow with you and your families!

Hospitality: Mankind is divisible into two great classes: Hosts and Guests

Welcome to the weekly link-up recently turned Blog-Hop Just Enough Info or just, JEI for short. This lovely Blog-Hop is hosted by The Zelie Group and we would love for you to join us! This week we are discussing Holiday Hospitality! It is the holiday season and I do love it! Thanksgiving, my birthday, Christmas and New Years! So many traditions to share with friends and family. Let's get started with this week's questions:

What's your go-to "someone's coming over" recipe?

I really enjoy quick and easy appetizers for when I have guests over. Meat and cheese tray, a vegetable tray with dressing and hummus and some delicious spinach dip! I like to throw things together to make my recipes and almost never "measure" the ingredients so the recipe I am about to share is a rough guesstimate. This is a basic recipe and I do add mushrooms, water chestnuts or other goodies to spruce this up at times.

Crockpot Spinach Artichoke Dip:

1 lb Frozen Spinach
1 Can Artichoke Hearts (diced)
2 Jars Cheese Alfredo
1 Package of Cream Cheese
1 Tbsp Minced Garlic
Pepper to taste

Drain and cut the artichoke hearts and dump all the other ingredients into the crockpot. Cook on high for 1-2 hours or on low for 3-4 hours. Serve with tortillas chips or fresh veggies. Enjoy!

You have 5 minutes to tidy before guest arrive. What are your tidying shortcuts?

This one is a toughie! My house is normally in a state of disarray, especially because I have two crazy kids and I have been working more due to the holiday season. So if I only had 5 minutes, I would try to hit the areas that would be used by my guest with a quick wipe down and moving articles that may get in their way. These areas would include the main bathroom, living room and if I had time, the dining area and kitchen. I don't expect things to be pretty but at least clean enough to use comfortably.

What sort of music sets the mood for the perfect gathering?

I like to play the sounds of the season! Normally when I have people over it is for a holiday or specific event so I will normally play something that is similar to the season. If there is no special music for the season, I am a HUGE fan of Celine Dion and similar musicians. Honestly, I prefer playing party games so most of the time there is no need for background music.

You have all week to answer this week's questions all about Hospitality:

1. What's your go-to "someone's coming over" recipe?
2. You have 5 minutes to tidy before guest arrive. What are your tidying shortcuts?
3. What sort of music sets the mood for the perfect gathering?

Next week we will be discussing Religious Education:

2. Do you or have you ever taught religious education?
3. What is your favorite religious education resource for kids?

First Sunday of Advent: Stir it Up Sunday

Today is the First Day of Advent! It's finally here! The season I have been preparing for over the past month and I could not be more excited about how the day progressed. Do you have family traditions that begin with Advent? We do! We normally welcome back our Elf on the Shelf (yep, we do it! and we use it to highlight the liturgical year too)! Our Elf is named Buddy.. I know it's real original but the kids' love him and his name.

We always set him up near our Advent Wreath on the day of his return so that the boys remember that it will be our first day lighting a candle in honor of Advent. We also have a Welcome Advent/ Welcome Back Buddy Breakfast! Buddy the Elf is so sweet that he even sets the plates, cups and forks on the table so its less work in the morning. We enjoyed caramel pumpkin pancakes because we love pumpkin everything in this house and it was a breakfast that could be "stirred up" on this Stir it Up Sunday. The first Sunday of Advent is called Stir it Up Sunday because of an old Advent prayer that begins with "Stir up, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people".

If you are interested in the adventures of Buddy and how we utilize him in our Liturgical celebrations follow me on Instagram or checkout #BuddyKongElfAdventures.

After breakfast, we enjoyed a little family time before heading off to the boys' first Christmas Children's Choir practice. Goalie has been beyond excited since he learned he was FINALLY old enough to join the choir this year and has been asking constantly when he could go to practice. Little Man on the other hand, wasn't planning on participating. He actually asked if he could just read while his brother rehearsed. I try my best not to force push my children into activities but I was disappointed Little Man didn't want to participated. It's funny how God intervenes because the music teacher running rehearsals was offering lollipops to the children participating in the choir and that's all it took for Little Man to change his mind and want to join. Go figure!

I have to be honest and say that I was not 100% ready for Advent to begin today and ran to three different stores searching for Advent Candles so we could Bless our Wreath and light our first purple candle during dinner. I was frantic until I came across some ribbon and decided to tie it to our white taper candles as a substitute until I can obtain some colored candles. I guess it looks a little fancier this way too... maybe I'll add the ribbon to the colored candles too?

I am a SUPER corny person and I love when you can play on words so even though I stirred up some pancakes for breakfast, I thought it would be fun to enjoy some turkey "stir"-fry for dinner (we still have TONS of leftovers from Thanksgiving) and I had plans to stir up some Christmas pudding too! Making Christmas pudding is actually a real tradition that often happens on Stir it Up Sunday but we ran out of time so we will be making our pudding tomorrow afternoon. Looking for an easy recipe? Check out my Menu Plan Monday post from this past week. It includes a recipe for a no steam Christmas pudding packed with protein and a little healthier than most Christmas Puddings. Do you have any Christmas Pudding recipes? If so, please share them!

Dinner was devoured and we ended our evening completing Day 1 of the Holy Heroes Advent Adventure as a family! It has been a tradition of ours for the past four years and the boys love it! Free coloring pages, cute videos and prayers all sent directly to your email each day.. you can't beat that! While I was running around town searching for Advent candles, I purchased some purple folders to hold the boys' Advent Adventure printouts and brand new notebooks for them to utilize in this new liturgical year as a prayer journal and to keep work that we do on the saints throughout the year.

Now that everyone is in bed, I am beyond thrilled to get started on my devotions too! I am using Advent with Saint Teresa of Calcutta, The Little Blue Book and my prayer journal. I will be writing out some New Liturgical Year Resolutions and evaluating why I haven't met some of these resolutions in the past.

What devotions are you trying out this year? I am ashamed to admit that I cannot remember an Advent season that I actually completed a full devotion and it is one of my goals to complete these properly this Advent season. Prayers would be greatly appreciated as I tackle this goal!

I know that it seems that this day was just packed full of family fun but I also am participating in an Advent Photo Challenge hosted by the Zelie Group! It started today but it's never too late to join in the fun. Check out the amazing pictures that were shared with us today by searching through the hashtags listed. How was your start to Advent? If it's not how you planned you still have plenty of time to get things prepared the way you want them! I hope this Advent season is prayerful and meaningful for you and your families.

This is being shared at CatholicMom.com for their Advent Wreath Linkup!

God Bless!

This is a family devotional that is only 99 cents for Kindle and $1.99 to purchase the book. This would be a wonderful addition to reuse year after year. If you are looking for a way to get your family back to the reason for the season this will be your go-to resource. I am always searching for great deals and you really can't beat this one.

{TWO}

This is not a pre-made kit but a kit that includes EVERYTHING you would need to start some great family traditions. The box includes a recipe for gingerbread and also includes two cookie cutters- one for the sides and roof, and one for the front & back. Instructions included, from baking to assembly. Gingerbread is used to celebrate several liturgical days throughout the year, not just Advent. At only $6.99 this kit would be a great addition to your Advent, Liturgical Year and family traditions.

{THREE}

The story of the Nativity is the pinnacle of the Advent season. This particular movie is only $4.05! I can personally say that my children love to watch cartoons and movies that are about their faith. We actually have this movie and they have already been asking to watch it because everyone is talking about Christmas. Well, I am having them wait to enjoy this movie for one our family movie nights during Advent but it is an amazing bargain, especially for a Religious movie.

{FOUR}

What could be better than relaxing by the fire with this coloring book that allows you to focus on the season of Advent. This could be an individual of family activity and a great calming way to end your evening. I have already shown this book to my hubby in hopes that he will gift this to me. Just so you know, this beautiful book is only $5.95!

Advent is suppose to be a mini-Lent. Utilizing a Sacrifice Manger, also known as a Christmas Crib, will help the whole family remember to say a couple extra prayers, do some good deeds and sacrifice just a little more during the weeks leading up to the birth of baby Jesus. This particular manger is only $3 right now as an early bird special but will be $5.95 soon.  This is a 5 pack so you can share this great idea with friends and family!

{SIX}

A great tradition to start with your family! The Jesse Tree will help you explore the "root of Jesse" and explain stories from the Old Testament. There are many options for Jesse Trees but I thought this one was a great deal because it includes ornaments, the book that explains all about the Jesse Tree and a pattern to make your tree. It's only $8.97!

{JEI}: What's in Your Closet?

Welcome to the weekly link-up recently turned Blog-Hop Just Enough Info or just, JEI for short. This lovely Blog-Hop is hosted by The Zelie Group and we would love for you to join us! This week we are discussing Clothing! Let's get started with this week's questions:

If you had to wear the clothes from another time period, when would it be?

If I could wear clothes from any time period it would be from the 1940's-1950's time period. I love the classic looks and the beautiful dresses of the era. The only problem I have in finding dresses like this nowadays is that they are always too short. I am a pretty tall woman (5'7") and most dresses are made too short for me to feel comfortable to wear on a regular basis. The dress I am wearing below is the closest I own to a 1950's dress.

What are you embarrassed that you wore but used to think was cool?

I have to say that I have never worn any clothes that have really embarrassed me because I have always been a t-shirt and shorts/ jeans kinda gal or workout clothes. I never really got into fashion because my family has never had a ton extra to spend on clothes and I was and still am happy rocking the same stuff I've always worn. The outfit below is a normal workout/ hanging out outfit for me. I love my crazy lime green socks too.

Now I will admit, I did put a RIDICULOUS amount of hair product, clips and other hair accessories in my hair though and that IS embarrassing.

What's your favorite article of clothing in your closet right now?

I'd say it would have to be this beautiful green dress I got at JC Penny's for my cousin's wedding this past September. I love the price (under $10!), color and style... I do wish it was a tad longer but It is my favorite!

You have all week to answer this week's questions all about Clothing:

1. If you had to wear the clothes from another time period, when would it be?
2. What are you embarrassed that you wore but used to think was cool?
3. What's your favorite article of clothing in your closet right now?

Next week we will be discussing Thanksgiving:

1. Do you have to cook for Thanksgiving?  If yes, what’s on the menu?  If no, high five!
2. What famous person would you like to invite to your family Thanksgiving?
3. Excluding family, health and basic needs met - what are 3 things that you are thankful for?

The Zelie Group has some fun questions coming up in the next few weeks so make sure to follow us on Facebook and we would love to hear what you are interested in! What are you looking to learn about? Do you have questions about the Faith? Questions about the Liturgical Year? We want to help and learn and grow with you and your families!
