{JEI}: Do Small Things with Great Love

Welcome to another week of Just Enough Info with The Zelie Group. This week we are discussing all about chores. I don't know about you but whenever I think about all the household chores and daily to-dos, I think about Saint Teresa of Calcutta. One of my most favorite quotes of her's is "Do small things with great Love."

 I'd love to introduce you to the other hosts of the JEI: Just Enough Info Linkup:

Warning the images in this post CAN NOT BE UNSEEN! Here are my answers to this weeks Just Enough Info Questions:

1. What chore should you be doing now instead of answering this question?

Well this is a loaded question! We are preparing to travel to attend my cousin's wedding in Kansas this weekend and boy are there a ton of chores I should be doing right now! This includes but trust me is not limited to laundry, dishes, grocery shopping and packing!  I mean you have to have clean clothes to pack on a trip right? And you probably don't want to have a sink full of dirty dishes making your home smell amazing while you are gone for a weekend. The biggest thing I really need to get done is grocery shopping! Not so much that I stock the pantries before we go but so that I get drinks and snacks for our trip. We are a very frugal family and it saves us a ton to bring food instead of stopping at fast food locations every couple hours. Plus it is much healthier to eat food prepared from home than the greasy mess from the traditional fast food locations. Now that I am thinking about it, I should probably clean the boys bathroom. I don't know how it is in other families but I am starting to believe that my boys are attempting to create artwork from their tubes of toothpaste and soap. It covers their entire bathroom! I clean it at the beginning of every week but by the end of the week it looks just like it did at the beginning. The never ending cycle.

2. Do your kids have chores? If yes, what’s your chore system?

Yes, Yes and Yes! Both of my boys have chores. I think it is important to teach my boys that teamwork, responsibility and accountability are necessary to grow into responsible and hardworking men. Little Man is responsible for: cleaning the litter box, taking out the trash, making his bed, and cleaning his room. Goalie is responsible for making his bed, sleeping in his own bed every night, picking up his toys and emptying the bathroom garbage can. Everyone in the house is responsible for putting away their folded clothes, putting away dirty dishes, completing homework and being respectful throughout each day.

We utilize a chore chart and monetary reward system to incentivize the boys to complete their chores and they are reminded frequently to do what is right. We also give extra cash when it is evident that it is deserving. For example, I received a message from Little Man's teacher earlier in the week that he has the highest grade in Math in his entire class! Goalie also impressed me while we were shopping earlier in the week and he didn't get upset when he was told he couldn't get a toy. He simply put the toy back and continued with us throughout the shopping trip without another word about it. Both boys earned extra for these great milestones. This reward method works for our family the best!

3. If someone gifted you a housekeeping service, would you use it?

Oh goodness! I would LOVE to use a housekeeping service! The only way I would ever use one is if it was gifted though. I am way too frugal to spend the money on it even though the relief of stress would be so amazing to know I could come home to a clean and sparkling house. Everyday is normally a mad dash to complete most of my everyday chores in between other responsibilities so everything looks "half-done." A gift like that would save me an enormous amount of time... even if it was only for one day. I would use the free time to take a nice long nap or enjoy a bottle of wine while I read on my patio. It would be like HEAVEN ON EARTH!

I am so blessed. I have an amazing husband that works hard, I have two amazing boys to love and grow with and I have a great job that allows me to work and still be available to be with my family as necessary. I would be lying is I said I don't get overwhelmed with juggling a work schedule, sports, doctor appointments, fun family activities and household chores because I do! I have to plan my menus so I know I have time to cook and that I have the ingredients necessary to make dinner. This doesn't include laundry, dishes, sweeping, mopping, the bathrooms or anything else that needs a good cleaning. I am sure it is the same for every other family but a girl can dream right?

Well that is my take on Just Enough Info this week. I would love to hear your thoughts!

Please Join us and Link Up with your answers to this week's questions about Chores:

1. What chore should you be doing now instead of answering this question?
2. Do your kids have chores? If yes, what’s your chore system?

Next week we will be discussing Mom Self-Care and here are the questions:

What is your mom beverage of choice?
What do you do to relax?
When was the last time you got away with girlfriends or alone (and the grocery store does NOT count)?

I can't wait to see how everyone answers this week.

Exaltation of the Cross

Today is the Exaltation of the Cross but it is also known as the Triumph of the Cross, Elevation of the Cross or Roodmas. Today is in celebration of finding the "True Cross," the cross that Jesus was crucified on. According to tradition, Saint Helena, near death, decided under divine inspiration to travel to Jerusalem to search for the Holy Sepulchre. This was in attempt to locate the True Cross. Judas, a man from Jerusalem,  aware of the tradition of the hiding of the Cross, led Saint Helena to the Holy Sepulchre. There they found three crosses. From a letter of St. Paulinus to Severus inserted in the Breviary of Paris it appears that St. Helena searched by a miracle to discover which was the True Cross. Saint Helena had a dead man unburied to be carried to the spot. At contact with the third cross, he came back to life. There is another tradition saying that the titulus, or inscription, had remained attached to the Cross.

In honor of the Exaltation of the Cross we enjoyed Crockpot Spaghetti Squash Marinara with Roasted Vegetables. We decided to eat this as our family dinner because I am still participating in my Vegan for a Week Challenge {Take 2} and because spaghetti is really a great and easy meal that is symbolic of this feast day. Red is a color that truly symbolizes the blood that was shed on the cross for our salvation. You can also serve it in a Cross shaped pan.

Crockpot Spaghetti Squash:
1 Medium-Large Spaghetti Squash
2 Cups Mushrooms
1 Small Onion (Sliced)
1 Medium Green Pepper (Sliced)
1 Jar Marinara
Italian Seasoning to taste

Cut the spaghetti squash in half short ways so it fits in the crockpot easier. Scoop out the seeds from the squash. Pour the entire jar of Marinara into the crockpot. Season the flesh of the spaghetti squash with Italian seasoning. Place the spaghetti squash face down in the crockpot. Add the vegetables on top of the spaghetti squash and place the lid on the crockpot. Cook on High for 1-2 hours or Low for 3-4 hours.

You can make cakes, cookies or any type of treat that is prepared in the shape of a cross. Checkout Catholic Cuisine for some really neat baking ideas.

In addition to food there are several fun activities you could do today. Participate in praying the Stations of the Cross or other prayers that center around the Cross. Put together a scavenger hunt that emulates the search of Saint Helena searching for the True Cross or decorate a Cross to use as a Rosary holder.

The way I envisioned the Cross Scavenger hunt would be to use symbols of the Stations of the Cross and hide them (maybe even pull out the Easter Eggs to hide the symbols). Create a map and little clues to lead the children to the next symbol until they reach the end that would be a Cross.

I wish I could have put together a scavenger hunt for the boys but we were double booked with football practice and a soccer game. In normal circumstances I add our fun activities to our weekend but we will be celebrating my cousin's wedding in Kansas! I hope you all enjoyed this special feast day and I would love to hear all about it!

Prayer Before A Crucifix:

Look down upon me, good and gentle Jesus, while before Thy face I humbly kneel, and with burning soul I pray and beseech Thee to fix deep in my heart lively sentiments of faith, hope and charity, true contrition for my sins, and a firm purpose of amendment; while I contemplate with great love and tender pity Thy five wounds, pondering over them within me, having in mind the words which David Thy prophet said of Thee, my Jesus: "They have pierced my hands and my feet; they have numbered all my bones."

Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be for the Holy Father's intentions

#WorthRevisit: Divine Mercy Chaplet

Thanks to the JEI Linkup and the parent's meeting at the first Sunday of CCD last week I have had prayer on the brain! The parent's at the CCD meeting were discussing how to incorporate prayer and more of our Catholic faith into their lives and the lives of their children. Honestly, I never realized that more parents weren't aware of the amazing Catholic blogs, websites and other resources that are available to them. I am contemplating creating a resource page for my CCD class to send home with students to share with their families.

This week for the #WorthRevisit  at Reconciled to You and Theology is a Verb I decided to share a movie review I did for the Divine Mercy Chaplet for Kids. This is one of my favorite prayers and I love that my children have grown to love it too. We as parents are the most important factor in determining whether our children will stay within the faith, movies, audios and activities that make their faith come alive make it become apart of them!

The Divine Mercy Chaplet for Kids {Movie Review}

This post contains affiliate links. I may be compensated with a commission when you purchase after clicking on a link. I may also have received the product for free. I appreciate your support!

I love that this movie makes it fun to pray! Check it out!

The Divine Mercy Chaplet for Kids is a beautiful depiction the Chaplet for the entire family. Sister Faustina is the host of this illustrated Divine Mercy Chaplet. Along with Sister Faustina is a group of young children that learning to say the Chaplet. Sister Faustina explains the way to properly pray the Chaplet and explains when to meditate on the Sorrowful Mysteries. The Sorrowful Mysteries are accurately portrayed and but is still sensitive to the eyes of the youngest viewers. The reactions of the children with Sister Faustina help children viewers to understand the overwhelming love that Jesus has for us and the importance of his sacrifice he made for us all. The children characters are easy to relate to and are shown participating in activities such as studying, playing with friends and receiving Reconciliation. I love how all of these daily activities are tied back to the Catholic Faith and the importance of how Jesus wants us to be self-sacrificing and forgiving people.

There are several learning tools utilized in this DVD that make a profound impact on children's ability to retain the prayers and how to use your rosary. The Chaplet is said out loud with Sister Faustina as the lead but it is also captioned below in an easy to follow format. The rosary is also shown along the bottom and lights each bead as the corresponding prayer in the Chaplet is said. In addition to the teaching of this important prayer, I love the music that corresponds with the illustrated story. My oldest son, who is only four, knows the Chaplet by heart thanks to this DVD and very often sings the "Thank you, my dear Jesus" song.  This DVD is the best way to make learning the Chaplet for children of any age easy and fun!

Vegan for a Week {Take 2}

I am in need of a reset for my body. Over the summer my husband and I challenged each other to a Vegan for a Week Challenge. It is a great way to cleanse your body and renew your eating habits. I am really excited about this challenge and hope I can inspire you to give it a try. It is also the last "official" week of summer so I thought the timing was perfect!

 Here is our delicious menu for the week and we will still be celebrating the Liturgical Year even with my added dietary restrictions. Since this is a special week I will be sharing some recipes here in this post and I am still linking up with Menu Plan Monday

Monday: Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary
Quinoa Vegetable Wraps

Tuesday:
Black Beans and Rice (Maybe Walnut Taco Meat)

Crockpot Spaghetti Squash and Marinara

Thursday: Our Lady of Sorrows
Quinoa Pilaf with Peas and Almonds

Friday:
Basil Pest Pasta with Roasted Vegetables

Saturday: Serina's Wedding
Wedding Reception

Sunday:
Three Bean Chili

Breakfast:

Some great vegan options for breakfast include overnight oats, plain oatmeal with fresh fruit topping, fruit smoothie, toast with almond butter. I think for this challenge I will stick with fruit smoothies and plain oatmeal. I am a little tired of the overnight oats for now. I still need to get pumpkin puree to make those amazing pumpkin pie latte oats again!

Lunch:

Salads, wraps and vegetable soups make great lunches. Beans, Rice, Quinoa and Vegetables are stables of a Vegan diet and there are so many different combinations to create great meals. I have a friend that eats Vegan everyday and she always mentions great Vegan places to eat and recipes.

This is a late post so I have finished Day 1 of my Vegan for a Week Challenge successfully! If you decide to try this challenge out, it is a great way to detox your body and get a nice boost of nutrients into your body!

God Bless!

{SQT}: The Great Things to Come

This week has been a complete blur. I have been fighting with my allergies or something and it has completely kicked my butt! So I thought I would save everyone from hearing how I didn't really complete much of anything... just started or halfway completed things. I think we all have a week or two like that every once in awhile. Instead I thought I would share about some of the fun new things that we will be diving into over the next few weeks because I need the motivation and looking to what the week ahead seems way more interesting and exciting than the mess of a week I muddled through this past week.

{ONE}

We are starting CCD tomorrow! This will be my second time volunteering as a Catechist in my older son's classroom as well. I am so looking forward to tomorrow. It will be the official start to a new week and I can wrap up all the "unfinished business" of last week with a clean slate. Little Man will be altar serving at the 8AM Mass as well so we will be up bright and early, ready to tackle the day.

{TWO}

I will be starting another Vegan for a Week Challenge Monday! I like challenging myself to be in a healthier lifestyle and I think I need the increase of nutrients from the fruits and veggies to help heal my body from whatever this "sickness" I'm fighting is doing to me. I also like to limit the type of food I am consuming as an offering to God. I do this with a grateful heart and will offer up the times I find this challenge difficult up to God for my sins and the sins of my family. Saint Rose of Lima gave up eating meat completely in honor of God. Please join me if you like!

{THREE}

Goalie will be starting a new group therapy session starting in a week or two. The Group is called the Dino School Group (so cute!). The group will consist of children that deal with developmental delays and other challenges like ADHD and SPD. Goalie is so excited to be around other boys and girls that understand how hard it is to be a child with delays in a regular classroom setting. I am excited to see how this will help Goalie control his anger, sadness and other behaviors that he struggles to contain.

{FOUR}

We will be going on a small trip to Kansas to visit with my family and celebrate my cousin Serina's wedding. When I lived in Florida, it was nearly impossible to see my dad's side of the family because the distance was so far, travel isn't cheap and taking time off work, school and other activities is difficult. Being closer to then geographically has been great! We were able to go visit for two days back in January and we will have another two days to celebrate this upcoming weekend.

{FIVE}

One of the few things I can say I can check off my to-do list from this week is I ordered the boys' Halloween costumes. We decided to all dress up as characters from Star Wars. The boys are all ready thinking of what Saints they would like to be for All Saints Day too. My boys love to dress up so these are two of their favorite memories to create during the Autumn season. The picture above is one of my favorites when Little Man dressed as Saint Dominic. I know its still over a month away but what are you doing for Halloween? All Saints Day?

{SIX}

We are all ready discussing what winter activity to put the boys in for the winter. In Florida there were outdoor sports all year long but here in Colorado they don't offer any outdoor sport due to the cold weather. Goalie was in karate last year so we contemplating picking it back up. It did wonders for his discipline and he actually had several other friends from his Disability Preschool class that attended the same Dojo. Little Man has been asking us about Cub Scouts. I have no experience with Cub Scouts so I sent out an email to the Pack he would be joining to get some basic information. I would really like to get them in a Blue Knights group but I don't think we have any near us. As of right now, I have no clue what we will decide or if the boys will be doing separate activities again.

{SEVEN}

We finally got a new couch that the entire family can sit on! I had to share because it has been the highlight of the entire week for the whole family. It takes up most of the living room but it is super comfy and already decorated for Autumn.

I am so excited about all the great things to come. Please pray I kick whatever it is my body is fighting because I would love to be able to breathe properly at mass and CCD tomorrow and maybe even get a little extra sleep so I am not so tired throughout the day!

God Bless!

Nativity of Mary: Maria Bambina

Today is the Nativity of Mary or in simpler terms, the Virgin Mary's Birthday. This is a special feast day celebrated on every 8th of September. The winegrowers in France called today the feast "Our Lady of the Grape Harvest". In tradition, grapes are brought to the local church to be blessed and then some of the blessed grapes (still on the vine) are placed within the hands of the statue of Mary. Grapes are also included in the meals on this day.

France is not the only country with special traditions to honor Mary on her birthday. In Goa, the feast of Mary's Nativity, called the "Monti Fest." Today is celebrated like a United States Thanksgiving! There are festivals and blessings on the harvest of new crops.

In my research of this special day, I came across the amazing website that discusses the devotion to the Holy Infant Mary (Maria Bambina). If you have some free time I think you should check out the website and learn about some special traditions tied to Mary as an infant and child.

To celebrate today there are so many different ways to honor Mary! You could make it as extravagant as having a full birthday party celebration in her honor or as simple as sharing a birthday cake as a family. You can enjoy some blue treats and foods like jello, blueberries in fruit salad or baked goods. Also check out Life, Love and Sacred Art for a Free Printable.

My family had a simple meal in Mary's honor because we had football practice and lots of homework tonight. We had some Italian Baked Chicken with homemade mashed potatoes and baby peas. I chose chicken and mashed potatoes because they are white to symbolize Mary's purity in infancy because she was born without sin. We added the baby peas because... well... they were baby peas. Sorry that was as far as my imagination went with our vegetable tonight. I am disappointed I forgot to snap a picture of our dinner because the boys and I were ravenous after our busy day.

I also wanted to bake a cake to celebrate as well but the boys are not allowed to have treats because they are grounded until this weekend. I think I still might bake a cake in Mary's honor over the weekend because I will be starting another Vegan for a Week Challenge on Monday. You can see our last Vegan Challenge Here. Check out how I keep our Liturgical Celebrations next week fun and tasty with these added food restrictions. I promise you won't be disappointed.

I also finished off the amazing bottle of wine my husband bought for us earlier in the week. Remember today is also called Our Lady of the Grape Harvest! As a lover of wine, I could not pass up the opportunity to honor Mary with that love!

How did your family honor Mary today?

In Honor of Our Lady's Nativity:

Vouchsafe that I may praise thee, O sacred Virgin; give me strength against thine enemies, and against the enemy of the whole human race. Give me strength humbly to pray to thee. Give me strength to praise thee in prayer with all my powers, through the merits of thy most sacred nativity, which for the entire Christian world was a birth of joy, the hope and solace of its life.

When thou wast born, O most holy Virgin, then was the world made light.
Happy is thy stock, holy thy root, and blessed thy fruit, for thou alone as a virgin, filled with the Holy Spirit, didst merit to conceive thy God, as a virgin to bear Thy God, as a virgin to bring Him forth, and after His birth to remain a virgin.

Have mercy therefore upon me a sinner, and give me aid, O Lady, so that just as thy nativity, glorious from the seed of Abraham, sprung from the tribe of Juda, illustrious from the stock of David, didst announce joy to the entire world, so may it fill me with true joy and cleanse me from every sin.
Pray for me, O Virgin most prudent, that the gladsome joys of thy most helpful nativity may put a cloak over all my sins.

O holy Mother of God, flowering as the lily, pray to thy sweet Son for me, a wretched sinner.

Amen.

Blessed Virgin Mary, pray for us!
